3 technologies shaping the learning revolution

Over the last two decades, the global learning industry gradually evolved to include technology-oriented learning approaches such as MOOCs, LMS, and LXPs. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced academic institutions and training providers to swiftly transform the learning industry as remote and hybrid learning environments became increasingly mainstream.

Even as the world adjusts to an endemic phase of COVID-19, the learning industry is unlikely to revert to its pre-pandemic days of learning. Instead, the global learning ecosystem is likely to be a blend of remote and in-person learning

Blended learning is especially vital to the global workforce as the digital economy becomes the foundation of the modern economy. Over the next five years, we will witness jobs across industries and sectors rapidly evolve into something new. Hence, the global workforce will need to continuously reskill and upskill if they want to adapt to the new labor market, effectively.

The Third Digital Learning Wave as this learning evolution has come to be known is heavily influenced by the urgency for upskilling and reskilling opportunities and a growing demand for learning ecosystems that align with the lifestyle of today’s global workforce

How can academic institutions, corporate training providers, and L&D departments in organizations meet the learning needs of the global workforce?

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

We’ve never seen a technology move as fast as AI has to impact society and technology. This is by far the fastest moving technology that we’ve ever tracked in terms of its impact and we’re just getting started,” said Paul Daugherty, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Accenture.

It is natural to wonder if AI will take over our jobs and increase the global rate of unemployment. Yet, the rapid automation of the labor market in 2020 and 2021 proved us otherwise. It showed us the real power of AI – that when utilized correctly, AI makes us learn, teach, and work smarter.

Hence, embedding AI into the learning and training ecosystem enables L&D trainers and practitioners to identify the skill gaps, learning needs, preferred learning modes, and current learner behavior of a workforce.

Subsequently, they are able to create personalized learning experiences for each worker and increase the productivity and employee retention of an organization.

Big Data

Corporate training is designed to equip employees with skills needed to navigate real-life work scenarios. As such, organizations should ensure their workforce is equipped with the right tools to manage and understand real world data.

If you want people to make the right decisions with data, you have to get in their head in a way they understand,” said Miro Kazakoff, Senior Lecturer of MIT Sloan.

Big Data provides academic institutions, training providers, and L&D practitioners with a clear and concise overview of the learning needs and behavior of corporate learners.

It also enables them to detect the weak spots in a learning ecosystem and address them in a way that aligns with the learning styles of each employee.

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality (VR/AR)

“Virtual reality is a technology of complete immersion, and choosing it for training simulations gives you complete control over the content and interactions that take place in that digital world,” wrote Oleg Fonarov, Member of the Forbes Technology Council.

“Augmented reality is a technology of partial immersion, relying on physical markers to determine relevant 3-D content that should be visualized in predetermined locations and situations,” Fonarov added.

Not only do these two immersive realities enable learners to experience real-life work scenarios and learn from their mistakes with minimal risk, such experiences prioritizes a learner-centered approach and improves learner and employee engagement.

Additionally, VR and AR reduces the cost of training and time spent learning without negatively impacting the quality of learning.

Meeting the need for lifelong learning and microlearning

Each of these three emerging technologies plays a vital role in establishing a corporate learning culture that enables the global workforce to pursue their lifelong learning opportunities.

Learning and training ecosystems powered by such technologies enable workers to learn while doing, while on-the-move, and when needed.

It also enables L&D trainers and practitioners to identify the learning needs, outcomes, and behavior of each learner. They can then use predictive analytics to create personalized bite-sized and attention-grabbing learning content for each learner.

Are You Ready for the Third Digital Learning Wave?

Technology has always shaped and influenced the learning landscape.

It began in the 1990s with the Internet boom and the subsequent introduction Computer-based Trainings (CBTs), Computer-aided Instructions (CAIs), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and SCORM Content Creation. This marked the beginning of the first digital learning wave. An era of instructor-centric, hierarchical, and centralized systems approach to learning.

The second digital learning wave emerged in the 2010s with the arrival of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), for academics and Learning Experience Platforms (LXPs), for the corporate world. During this wave, learners began to gain control over their learning journey. They were able to personalize their learning journey to better suit their personal and professional aspirations.

When the pandemic struck in early 2020, the global technology and job market landscapes underwent an accelerated and unprecedented transformation.

“Workers desiring for opportunities to apply what they have learned to improve their work and grow their careers,” shared Patricia Chew, Vice President of Talent & Learning at Sembcorp.

Academic institutions and organizations also quickly realized the need to swiftly revolutionize the learning and training ecosystem. Thus, the arrival of the third digital learning wave.

Unlike the earlier two waves, this wave is expected to transform the global learning landscape for a tech-driven labor market and skills-powered economy.

A Tech-driven Labor Market

Technology has arrived faster than L&D practitioners can train people to be skilled enough to handle the technology,” shared Thomas Paris, Chief Learning Architect of Kydon Group and ZilLearn at the LEARNTech Asia Conference 2021.

Up to 80% of the global workforce are deskless workers, that is approximately 2.7 billion people working outside the traditional workplace environment and norm. Yet, the training and development ecosystem for the corporate world remains largely in person.

Training providers and institutions ought to utilize new technologies like AI, blockchain technology, Big Data, and cloud computing to adapt their learning ecosystem to the growing number of deskless workers and the trend of making learning more flexible for corporate learners.

Moreover, “employers are looking for training and development workshops that enable learners to learn within the shortest span of time, apply what they learned, and create significant impact to the business outcome,” said Chew.

Such emerging technologies will enable organizations to embrace the third digital learning wave by “building a culture of continuous learning throughout their organization and emphasizing the role of coaching, feedback, leadership, and ownership,” wrote Stephanie Baele, EY Belgium People Advisory Services Manager and Pieter Nobels, EY Belgium People Advisory Services Executive Director.

Strengthening A Skills-powered Economy

As jobs become increasingly skills-intensive, tech-oriented, and interdisciplinary, the global workforce is expected to develop a multitude of skills.

Southeast Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam emphasize the importance of core competencies such as general administrative skills, marketing and sales, and business development skills.

“It’s not just digital skills that are critical but also skills such as communication and human connect … these will really pave the way for the new work landscape,” said Salil S. Parekh, CEO and Managing Director of Infosys at the recent World Economic Forum 2022.

Although tech talent remains highly in demand, the third digital learning wave places equal emphasis on human skills and core competencies. The latter two enable individuals to pivot their careers within and between industries, and differentiate themselves in the sea of tech-centric talent.

“There is no longer a competitive advantage in simply knowing more than other people, because Google knows everything. What the world cares about is not how much you know, but what you can do with it,” said Tony Wagner, Senior Research Fellow at the Learning Policy Institute.

Surge of EdTech Platforms

“As moving to a digital economy is one of the future drivers of economic growth, we do not have enough skills and are slowing down the transition,” noted Aiman Ezzat, CEO of Capgemini SE at the recent World Economic Forum 2022.

This is why edtech platforms are growing in demand. Working individuals who want to keep their skills fresh, distinguish themselves in the job market, and advance their learning journey at a cheaper rate (than pursuing a more traditional degree) are likely to explore the learning opportunities made available by edtech platforms.

Moreover, organizations can utilize these platforms to cater to the learning needs of their workforce especially as these platforms are best known for their bite-sized, mobile-first, and on-the-move features.

As the race between learning and technology continues, we need to reflect on our readiness to embrace the third digital learning wave.

The road ahead for Kydon and ZilLearn is ambitious yet clear. By 2040, we envision a world where education may potentially be fully democratized, where anyone, anywhere, can access learning tailored to their needs, and where organizations are equipped with the tools to nurture talent at scale. Our commitment to leveraging AI, data, and digital transformation will ensure that learning is no longer constrained by time, geography, or economic barriers.

We are inspired by industry leaders who share this vision. As Bill Gates once said, “The advance of technology is based on making it fit in so that you don’t really even notice it, so it’s part of everyday life.” Learning, powered by AI, should be just as seamless.

Kydon is not just building a product; we are shaping the future of education. Join us in this journey as we redefine learning for the next generation.

ZilLearn Successfully Brings Singapore Training Partner into eLearning Industry

In March 2022, Kydon Group announced that its subsidiary ZilLearn had been appointed by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) to be its inaugural partner for the “Learning-Go-Digital” program.

The aim of this program is to offer subsidized digital transformation to enable Singapore-based training providers to create accessible, flexible, and adaptable eLearning video lessons that meet the changing demands of the global workforce. Over the past few months, ZilLearn has been working with BELLS Academic Group to make them active players in the global eLearning industry by transforming their classroom training sessions.  We are delighted to share their story.

Singapore Leader Inspired to Grow

With over 13 years of experience in Singapore, BELLS is a SSG registered training provider focused on lifelong education as a means to develop a skilled workforce under two distinct brands: BELLS Tech Hub and BELLS Baking Studio. These training programs are designed specifically to meet the global and domestic hiring trends, thus ensuring their learners are equipped with skills and knowledge needed to embark on their unique career journeys.

Digital Transformation Process

BELLS embarked on the Learning-Go-Digital program to help them rapidly dive into the eLearning industry to reach new learners, and to shine a special spotlight on their trainers. ZilLearn organized knowledge exchange workshops to better understand their business; which involved learning more about BELLS’ flagship courses, classroom trainers, 2-year company vision, and how ZilLearn can complement their growth. These workshops also enabled BELLS to understand how ZilLearn’s platform can transform their offline programs into micro-learning courses suitable for today’s global community of learners.

The ZilLearn Learning-Go-Digital team, with expert guidance from program lead Dr. Janny Chen, carefully reviewed training materials from BELLS’ previous in-person sessions to prioritize topics, and design bite-sized video lessons in close collaboration with the original subject matter experts. It was important for us to share our microlearning approach and philosophy with the BELLS team to help them scale independently over time.

The Masterclass Experience

Our vision has been to raise the Singapore training industry to compete with the ever-rising quality in eLearning production from around the world. The ZilLearn team partnered with an established video-production studio to create lessons that would help local providers expand their business with a great first impression.

Although the culinary experts were comfortable in the classroom setting – presenting in front of many cameras often comes with a learning curve. In addition to the speaking notes prepared by our team, the filming director & crew brought with them personalized guidance to help the confectionery gurus successfully bring their skills to video. The end result is a polished and professional set of video lessons, available for learners to watch at their own pace on any platform. BELLS will launch over a dozen new courses on ZilLearn next month, in the meantime check out this teaser video – YouTube link.

At Kydon Group, we are glad to partner with forward-thinking teams like BELLS to participate in this program to help them expand their business from the classroom into the APAC region, and beyond.
